Rationale – Supporting Feminist Dialogues

The Brisbane International Feminist Conference 2008 aims to further feminist dialogues about the status of women and the continued violence against women and children as human rights violations. Conference organisers believe that the status of women in Australia and indeed globally, has been on the decline in the last decade.

The 2008 International Feminist Conference’s overall goal is to provide a forum to bring feminist thinkers, researchers, academics, service providers and community women together, to share information about pressing violations against women and children.  The abstracts we have selected for the program were chosen for their merit as stand alone papers and we are thrilled to be able to deliver an exciting and dynamic range of topics. We know there are gaps in the program in areas of great concern for feminists and there were many fantastic abstracts that we just had no room to include, but we certainly hope that the open floor sessions will offer opportunity for input on issues of importance for delegates.

Feminism

Feminism is a wonderful politic, addressing the oppression of women and children, and as we all know comes is many different varieties. The organisers of this conference tried to be sensitive to political differences in organising the program and would like to promote a message of tolerance. We believe it is everyone’s right to express their opinions and if there is a difference of opinion, the conference can be an opportunity for women to dialogue, listen and learn from each other. There is an hour and a half devoted each day to listening to women’s opinions from the floor. We would like to encourage a respectful listening space, to acknowledge our differences when they arise by explaining what we think and hope that our commonalities will feed into key recommendations.

Recommendations

Recommendations will be recorded from each session at the conference. All recommendations from the conference can then be tabled to relevant bodies, including for Australia, feeding recommendations into the Ministerial on the Status of Women that is scheduled for late September 2008.
